Alison Morton

Alison Morton M.C.S.P Grad Dip Phys

I qualified as a chartered physiotherapist from Leeds University Hospitals in 1984, then gained valuable post-graduate experience in general physiotherapy in Bristol hospitals before coming to Plymouth to work for the Royal Navy in 1986.

Whilst with the R.N. I had first rate sports and exercise medicine training combined with cutting edge orthopaedic experience. Alongside my clinical practice I was lead physio with Devonport Field Gun crew, working with them for 12 years. They competed annually at the Royal Tournament in what was known at the time as ‘the toughest team sport in the world’ and I am proud of my long association with this Royal Naval tradition.

My career in private practice started in 1988 and by 1993 I had established Alison Morton Physiotherapy with the aim of using my physiotherapy skills and broad depth of clinical experience to provide my patients with both evidence and clinically based best practice. My passion for active involvement in sports physiotherapy progressed to my becoming involved in local and then National and representative Rugby union, becoming Plymouth Albion’s physio from 2001 to 2007, during which time they rose through the leagues to play top level rugby in the Championship.

Aside from my interest in sports medicine I am experienced in the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal conditions and have a strong track record in the successful treatment and management of spinal and joint conditions. I am one of the first Chartered Physiotherapists in the U.K. to specialise in the field of weight management, being part of the team of practitioners in Plymouth delivering NHS service to patients suffering from the effects of obesity.

Over the past 10 years I have worked with elite swimmers, rekindling my personal enjoyment of open water swimming. Parkinson’s UK is a charity close to my heart and every year I aim to raise funds for this worthy charity. My latest event was raising £2.5k completing the London to Brighton cycle ride, a great day out!

Paul Soley MBA BSc [Hons] M.C.S.P AACP

I moved to Plymouth in 2007 to join the Physiotherapy Bachelor of Honours Degree programme at the University of Plymouth, and I fell in love with the people, the city, and the surrounding area. Immediately, I knew this is where I would want to live once I had completed my studies.

Throughout my extensive training it was clear that I had a huge interest in musculoskeletal conditions and rehabilitation following orthopaedic operations. With this always in the back of my mind, I sought to gain extremely valuable experiences whilst working in the major hospitals throughout Devon and Cornwall before accepting the role of lead physiotherapist for all ward based and outpatient physiotherapy interventions at The Peninsula Treatment Centre in Plymouth. During the almost 10-year period where I held this position, I had overseen the treatment of over ten thousand post-operative total hip and knee replacements, and approximately 5 thousand post-operative minor operations, including foot and ankle fusions, osteotomies, arthroscopic subacromial shoulder decompressions, rotator cuff repairs, shoulder replacements, Dupuytrens contracture release, trapeziectomies, and a multitude of other hand surgeries that required thermoplastic hand splinting.

I have worked with patients from the Royal Navy, Army, Royal Marines, the Royal Airforce, and professional rugby. I have a very keen interest in being able to diagnose, treat and resolve any painful conditions that a patient report. I love seeing the positive patient outcomes of hands-on manual therapy techniques and I have been a registered acupuncture practitioner with the Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists since 2012 (www.aacp.org.uk).

My physiotherapy knowledge has allowed me to link my professional and personal life where I have been able to treat fellow runners, cyclists, swimmers, and triathletes. I have completed many marathons (London x 5, New York, Paris, Dublin), more half marathons than I can count, cycling endurance sportives, Ironman triathlons (Kalmar, Copenhagen, Bolton), and in the early hours I can regularly be found swimming in the Plymouth Sound.
